Wrexham suffer 'significant' Smith injury blow

What the report says
Wrexham forward Sam Smith is set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines after sustaining a knee injury during Friday’s 1-0 Championship defeat at Sheffield United, manager Phil Parkinson said. According to BBC Sport Football, Smith is due to see a specialist on Tuesday to assess the damage, and Parkinson said the club’s early expectation is that the 28-year-old may require surgery.
Parkinson said Smith came off during the match, continued briefly, and then experienced significant swelling in the knee the following day. The extent of the injury and the likely recovery timeline will not be clear until after the specialist consultation, but the manager described the absence as “significant.” Smith joined Wrexham from Reading in January 2025.
The setback adds to Wrexham’s attacking problems ahead of Wednesday’s home game against Championship leaders Middlesbrough. Josh Windass and Nathan Broadhead are also unavailable, while Callum O’Hare remains a doubt after missing the Sheffield United defeat. Parkinson said the injuries could open the door for younger players, including 21-year-old Bailey Cadamarteri, who has made five substitute appearances this season and has yet to start a senior match for the club. In broader context, injuries to key forwards can quickly affect squad rotation and results in a competitive Championship season.
