What the report says

BBC Sport reports that the conflict in the Middle East is increasingly disrupting the sporting calendar across Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain and nearby countries, with events postponed, moved or left uncertain. The latest major change is the 2027 Asian Cup, which was due to be staged in Saudi Arabia but has been pushed back by almost a year because of security concerns linked to missile threats from Yemen’s Houthi movement.

The article says the region has already seen wider fallout, including the cancellation of Formula 1 race weekends in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia earlier this year after tensions involving the United States and Iran. BBC Sport notes that the Qatar and Abu Dhabi F1 races at the end of the season are also under review, while the 2027 Bahrain and Saudi Arabia races could be at risk if the situation does not improve. In football, Saudi Pro League matches have mostly continued, but some fixtures have been delayed and this weekend’s full round was called off after the Asian Cup postponement.

Other sports have also been affected. BBC Sport says the Dakar Rally has moved away from Saudi Arabia, Rally Saudi Arabia has been cancelled, and the Six Kings Slam tennis event in Riyadh has been postponed. The women’s WTA Finals will no longer be held in Saudi Arabia and will instead take place in Indian Wells. Several boxing, esports, cycling and triathlon events have also been cancelled or relocated, showing how uncertainty around security and logistics is reshaping major sporting plans in the region.
