Medical Xpress reported on July 26, 2026, that researchers at the University of Texas at Austin have found evidence that working memory can quickly reorganize its priorities after an interruption. The study, published in Communications Psychology, examined how people manage temporarily stored information while adapting to unexpected changes during a task.

According to the report, Ziyao Zhang, Jarrod A. Lewis-Peacock and colleagues tested 50 adult participants using a modified version of the arcade game Snake. Players had to remember the brief on-screen locations of one, two or four apples and steer the snake to them. In half the trials, a new target, a grape, appeared unexpectedly, forcing players to change course before returning to the hidden apples.

The researchers found that, when no distraction occurred, participants tended to prioritize remembered targets that were closest to the snake. After a distraction shifted the snake’s position, participants adjusted their focus toward the apple nearest the updated location. Medical Xpress reported that this reallocation became less flexible when participants had to remember more items, and that after an interruption participants appeared to rely on only one working-memory item at a time.

The findings matter because working memory supports routine activities such as driving, shopping and completing work tasks, where interruptions can require rapid replanning. The article notes that future research could examine the neural mechanisms behind this updating process. More broadly, the work may help refine models of working memory and could offer background for brain-inspired computational or artificial intelligence systems.
