Wisconsin tornado causes extensive damage and cuts power to thousands of homes - PBS

What the report says

PBS, citing an Associated Press report, said a tornado moved through eastern Wisconsin on Monday, causing widespread damage and leaving more than 30,000 people without electricity. The National Weather Service confirmed the tornado by radar in Winnebago County, roughly 90 miles northwest of Milwaukee, with damage reported in communities including Appleton, Menasha and areas near the Fox Cities region.

The report described splintered homes, downed trees, damaged power lines, debris on highways and a heavily damaged warehouse. Local officials said they had not confirmed deaths or injuries as of the report, though emergency crews were still checking affected areas. Winnebago County Executive Gordon Hintz said the available footage showed major destruction, while Outagamie County Executive Tom Nelson reported severe damage in Menasha and Fox Crossing, including accounts of collapsed buildings.

The National Weather Service office in Green Bay issued a tornado warning for Appleton, Menasha and Neenah shortly before noon, after the area had already been under a severe thunderstorm warning. The storm was later reported moving over Lake Winnebago toward Fond du Lac County. Officials urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel because of road closures, blocked streets and fallen power lines.

In Menasha, a local utility said the city of about 18,000 was believed to be fully without power after a transmission line went down, and authorities opened a church shelter for people unable to remain safely at home. PBS/AP also reported that severe weather was expected to continue in parts of east-central and southeastern Wisconsin through Monday afternoon, with risks including strong winds, hail and a possible brief tornado.
