KMBC Kansas City reported that Mia Bieniemy, the 57-year-old wife of Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, was hospitalized after a shooting at the family’s home in Loudoun County, Virginia, on Sunday evening. The outlet cited ESPN reporter Nate Taylor as first reporting Monday that she had been injured, and said the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office reported a shooting in the One Loudoun neighborhood at about 7:30 p.m.

According to KMBC, dispatch audio connected to an address associated with the Bieniemy family indicated that a woman matching Mia Bieniemy’s age had been shot in the chest, was conscious and had difficulty breathing. KMBC said the audio identified the shooter as the victim’s son. Loudoun County jail records listed Elijah Zion Bieniemy, 27, in custody Monday on charges including malicious wounding and use of a firearm in a felony. Sheriff Mike Chapman later confirmed Elijah Bieniemy’s involvement and arrest to WJLA, and said the victim had been shot twice.

Court documents obtained by KMBC accuse Elijah Bieniemy of shooting his mother with a Ruger .22-caliber firearm. The complaint says Mia Bieniemy suffered wounds to her left forearm and left shoulder, with a projectile crossing her chest, and that she required surgery with part of a projectile remaining in her body.

The Chiefs said the team was aware of an incident involving Eric Bieniemy’s family but would not comment further out of respect for privacy. Head coach Andy Reid told reporters after practice Monday that Mia Bieniemy was stable and that Eric Bieniemy, who had been at training camp in St. Joseph, Missouri, was with his wife at the hospital. Reid said there was no timeline for Bieniemy’s return to team duties.
