The United States and Japan carried out a rare coordinated currency intervention last week to support the yen after it dropped to a 40-year low against the US dollar. According to Al Jazeera, the move involved the US Treasury selling euros for yen while Japanese authorities also bought yen, beginning on July 31. The currency later recovered somewhat, rising to around 157 per dollar after touching 163.

Al Jazeera said the intervention was unusual because governments typically do not act to bolster another country’s currency. The yen matters well beyond Japan because it is one of the world’s most heavily traded currencies, and sharp swings can affect global funding conditions and financial stability. Experts quoted by the outlet said Washington’s goal was not only to help Tokyo, but also to prevent disorderly market spillover.

The article linked the yen’s weakness to Japan’s long period of slow growth and years of very low interest rates, which have weighed on the currency even as they supported exports and tourism. It also noted that Japan has spent tens of billions of dollars in recent years trying to defend the yen. The publication said the US has an additional concern: if the yen keeps weakening, Japan could sell part of its large holdings of US Treasury securities, which could put upward pressure on US borrowing costs.

Analysts quoted by Al Jazeera said the intervention may provide only temporary relief unless Japan changes its monetary policy. They argued that the wide interest-rate gap between Japan and other major economies remains a central driver of the yen’s decline.
