WHO calls for 'intensified' response as DR Congo Ebola cases near 4,000

The World Health Organization is urging a stronger response to the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, as reported by France 24 Africa. The broadcaster said infections are rising quickly and that the country’s seventeenth Ebola outbreak, declared in mid-May, has already caused more than 1,700 deaths. Case totals were said to be approaching 4,000.

According to the report, WHO has asked for an “intensified” medical effort to contain the spread. Doctors have been deployed to the DR Congo, and specialized treatment centers have been established in the hardest-hit provinces. The response is focused on the areas most affected by the outbreak as health teams try to slow transmission and care for patients.

France 24 Africa also said vaccine trials are continuing in parallel with the emergency response. The outbreak underscores the continuing public health challenge posed by Ebola in central Africa, where repeated flare-ups have required rapid coordination between national authorities, international agencies and medical workers.
