What the report says

West Ham United have publicly condemned a chant aimed at winger Manor Solomon that was heard from a section of their away supporters during last weekend’s Championship opener at Burnley. In a statement released before Saturday’s first home league match against Charlton Athletic, the club described the chant as offensive and divisive and said it carried an anti-Palestine message, according to BBC Sport Football.

The club said supporters should remember their responsibility to represent West Ham properly and stressed that every fan is an ambassador for the team. It also said that all supporters, whatever their background, should be able to attend matches without fear, discrimination or abuse. West Ham added that chanting is a normal part of matchdays, but urged fans to support the team in ways that do not create division or cause offence.

Solomon, an Israel international, joined West Ham from Tottenham this summer and made his debut in the 2-2 draw at Turf Moor. BBC Sport noted that the 27-year-old has previously had loan spells at Fulham and Leeds, and won Championship success with Leeds in the 2024-25 season. The incident comes as football clubs continue to face scrutiny over discriminatory chanting and the responsibility of supporters at matches.
