Welsh actor Matthew Rhys makes Emmy Awards history with double win

What the report says
Welsh actor Matthew Rhys made Emmys history by becoming the first performer to win two lead acting awards in the same night at the US television ceremony, according to BBC World News. Rhys was recognised for two different shows: the supernatural comedy Widow’s Bay, where he played a mayor, and the psychological thriller The Beast In Me, in which he portrayed a lead role alongside Claire Danes. The wins took place at the latest Emmy Awards in the United States, with Rhys dedicating one of the prizes to people in Wales and describing the country as small but strong.
BBC reported that Rhys also said backstage that moments like this help put Wales “on the map,” while thanking his family, colleagues and early supporters in his acceptance speeches. His partner, actor Keri Russell, attended the ceremony and was also nominated. The double win is notable because while several actors have been nominated for two lead categories in the same year, none had previously won both.
The ceremony also featured other major winners, including Jean Smart, Allison Janney and Noah Wyle, as well as prizes for Kate O’Flynn and Alan Cumming. BBC said there were tributes during the show to Michael J Fox and Dolly Parton, alongside a broader in memoriam segment for figures from television and film. The result matters because it places Rhys among the most successful Emmy performers of the night and adds a rare milestone for a Welsh actor on a major international stage.
