What the report says

A California man arrested at President Donald Trump’s Los Angeles-area golf club has been charged with multiple felonies after authorities said he was carrying weapons and posing as if he were part of a security detail. Al Jazeera reported that Jeanine John Taele, 38, was taken into custody on Sunday at Trump National Golf Club in Rancho Palos Verdes, where Trump was expected to visit later that week for a Republican National Committee dinner.

According to the federal complaint cited by the outlet, Taele was seen on the property on Friday wearing an earpiece and recording the activities of federal agents during a security assessment. Prosecutors said a search of his truck found a loaded 9mm handgun, binoculars and a badge reading “security protection agent.” Authorities later searched his home in Downey and reported finding an unregistered short-barreled rifle, other firearms, magazines, ammunition, body armor and notebooks containing what they described as concerning statements.

Taele pleaded not guilty on Monday and was granted bail of $250,000. He was also facing earlier state charges tied to an unrelated incident, and a scheduled federal weapons hearing was later canceled, according to the report. Al Jazeera noted that he has not yet been taken into federal custody.

The case has drawn attention because it came just before a planned presidential visit and involved claims of impersonating security personnel at a high-profile political site. As reported, Taele is a former Marine who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, though the article did not connect that background to the alleged offenses.
