US hits Iran for 8th consecutive night; Tehran returns fire on Gulf bases

Al Jazeera, citing its staff and wire agencies, reported that the US military carried out another night of strikes on Iran, marking the eighth consecutive night of attacks. Iranian media said areas near Sirik in Hormozgan province, Qeshm Island and a site near Shadegan in Khuzestan province were hit. Al Jazeera said there were no immediate casualty reports from the latest US strikes.

US Central Command said the operation was meant to punish Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps after ballistic missile and drone attacks on a US base in Jordan on Friday killed two US service members, left one missing and sent four others to hospital. CENTCOM said the latest targets included coastal surveillance and air defence facilities, maritime assets, and missile and drone storage sites, framing the attacks as an effort to reduce threats to shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.

Iranian media and the Iranian military said Tehran responded by targeting US military assets at two bases in Kuwait, including an ammunition depot at Al-Adiri camp and radar systems at Ali Al Salem base. The report also said Iranian officials accused Washington of breaching an interim agreement signed last month, while Iran’s leadership warned of severe consequences if US attacks continued.

The confrontation is significant because it is widening across the Gulf and involves infrastructure near the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global energy shipments. Al Jazeera reported that recent US strikes have also hit bridges and desalination plants, with Iranian authorities saying at least 50 people have been killed and more than 500 wounded over the past three weeks.
