Union reports 108 attacks on Palestinian journalists in July

The Palestinian Journalists Syndicate says Israeli forces and settlers carried out 108 attacks on Palestinian journalists and media workers in the occupied West Bank in July, according to a statement from its Freedoms Committee reported by Al Jazeera on 9 August 2026. The group described a range of violations, including detention, beatings, interrogation, blocking coverage, and the seizure or destruction of press equipment.

The committee said brief detentions and reporting restrictions were the most common incidents, with 58 cases. It also recorded 11 settler attacks on journalists, along with 12 instances in which Israeli forces fired stun grenades or tear gas at reporters. Other documented incidents included six beatings, four injuries involving bleeding while covering events in Gaza, two detentions, four interrogations, and several raids on homes or media offices.

Al Jazeera reported that the syndicate said the pattern has made it harder for journalists to cover Israeli military raids and settler violence in the West Bank. The statement called for journalists to work without threats or pursuit and urged accountability. The figures come amid a broader crisis for press freedom in the conflict, with rights groups saying more than 270 journalists have been killed since October 2023; that wider toll is background cited by the outlet, not a finding from the syndicate’s July count.
