Uncle-Tusiime Foundation Launches Contract Farming Programme to Link Farmers to Guaranteed Market-

The Uncle-Tusiime Development Foundation has launched the ABC Contract Modern Farming Model, an agriculture programme aimed at linking Ugandan farmers to verified buyers before planting. According to Nile Post, the initiative was introduced during a two-day media retreat in Kampala and is designed to encourage demand-led production rather than speculative farming.

Foundation officials said the model is intended to help farmers reduce losses caused by poor planning, volatile prices and middlemen, while improving incomes and market access. National Project Coordinator Valentine Muhereza Kachaina said the programme will organize farmers into producer groups and cooperatives and support them with inputs, irrigation, mechanisation, extension services, financing and market information. The foundation says the approach should also improve productivity, post-harvest handling and competitiveness in regional and international markets.

The ABC Market Model targets three market areas: export markets, regional markets in the East African Community and COMESA, and Uganda’s domestic market. In general, contract farming involves agreements made before planting that set out the expected quantity, quality and price of produce, which can lower risk for farmers if buyers and terms are reliable.

Flavia Nyakato, the foundation’s public relations officer, said the organization also plans work in education, health, youth empowerment and entrepreneurship. The foundation is the Uganda-based implementation arm of a Kenya-based parent organization, and it says the wider goal is community development alongside agricultural transformation.
