UK by-election sees record 34 candidates as Farage seeks return

Al Jazeera reports that Nigel Farage, leader of Reform UK, is attempting to win back the Clacton parliamentary seat in an August 13 by-election after resigning earlier in July. The contest will feature 34 candidates, which Tendring District Council says is believed to be the largest field ever for a United Kingdom parliamentary election.

The by-election follows scrutiny of gifts and donations to Farage that, according to Al Jazeera, were not initially declared under parliamentary rules. The vote matters because it will test whether Farage can retain local support despite the controversy, while also drawing attention to the role of protest, fringe and novelty candidates in UK elections. Al Jazeera noted that the online prediction market Polymarket gave Farage a strong implied chance of winning, though such markets are not official forecasts.
