Uganda, Somalia forces strengthen security coordination in Lower Shabelle

Ugandan and Somali security forces have agreed to deepen coordination with local authorities and communities in Somalia’s Lower Shabelle region, according to Nile Post. The commitment was discussed at a joint security meeting in Buulo Mareer on Tuesday, where commanders, local officials and partner-force representatives reviewed the security situation in the area.

The meeting focused on Kontunwaarrey District and nearby areas, with participants saying closer cooperation was needed to improve community safety and support stability. Kontunwaarrey District Commissioner Ibrahim Haji Hussein urged local leaders, elders and young people to work more closely with security agencies to help protect residents and maintain order.

Lt Col Don Naijuka, who commands the UPDF 143 Infantry Battalion, said continued teamwork among the forces was important for protecting communities and sustaining security in Lower Shabelle. The gathering included representatives from the Uganda People’s Defence Forces, the Somali National Army and the Danab Brigade.

Maj Faarax of the SNA 62nd Infantry Battalion praised Uganda’s continued role in Somalia’s peace and security efforts. In broader context, Uganda is one of the countries contributing troops to the African Union-backed mission in Somalia, where cooperation with Somali forces has remained central to countering insecurity in regions such as Lower Shabelle.
