Prince Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I has been installed as the new Omukama of Tooro, following traditional rituals held at Karuziika Palace in Fort Portal City, Uganda. According to The Independent’s report republished by AllAfrica, the installation took place early Tuesday after an overnight procession that began Monday night at Rwengoma Palace and moved several kilometres through Fort Portal with Nyabongo and large crowds of subjects.

The ceremony included a series of symbolic customary acts tied to the succession. The report says the incoming king was met at Mugabante, the palace entrance, where a mock battle was staged as part of the transfer of authority. Royal ritualists also presented him with regalia, including the main drum Butwarane, spears and a shield. The sound of the drum and the unveiling of palace lions were described as marking the end of mourning for the late Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV and the start of a new reign.

The article said the public procession was led under traditional protocol, with officials noting that women did not take part in the overnight trek, though they could attend later church and coronation events. The formal coronation programme was set to continue with a church service at St. John’s Cathedral in Fort Portal, followed by the official ceremony at the palace. President Yoweri Museveni was expected to attend as chief guest.

The Tooro succession is significant because the kingdom remains an important cultural institution in western Uganda, and the transition brings closure to the period following the previous monarch’s death.
