Prince Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I was installed early Tuesday as the new Omukama of Tooro during traditional rituals at Karuziika Palace in Fort Portal City, western Uganda, according to The Independent as distributed by AllAfrica. The installation followed an overnight procession that began at Rwengoma Palace late Monday and moved through the city with thousands of supporters accompanying the new king to the palace.

The report says the ceremonial journey included chanting, drumming and other customary practices tied to the transfer of authority in the Tooro Kingdom. Kingdom officials said the overnight trek followed traditional rules, including a restriction that kept women from joining that specific ritual, while noting that women could attend the church service and public coronation scheduled for later in the day.

At Karuziika Palace, Nyabongo underwent further rites, including a symbolic mock battle at the entrance, presentation of royal drums and regalia, and the opening of the palace’s lion sculptures after mourning for the late Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV. The kingdom’s programme said a church blessing at St. John’s Cathedral and a formal coronation were to follow, with President Yoweri Museveni expected as chief guest. The transition marks an important moment for the Tooro monarchy and its public ceremonies in Fort Portal.
