Uganda: General Muhoozi Reinstates Uganda's Participation in 2027 Invictus Games

Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has reversed an earlier decision and reinstated the country’s participation in the 2027 Invictus Games, which are scheduled for Birmingham, United Kingdom. The update followed what the report described as clarification from Buckingham Palace about King Charles III’s position on Uganda’s involvement.

According to Nile Post, the change came after a phone call between Gen Muhoozi and Sir Clive Alderton, the Principal Private Secretary to King Charles III and Queen Camilla. The Uganda People’s Defence Forces said Alderton relayed that the King had no objection to Uganda taking part and encouraged preparations to continue. A UPDF statement also said the King was moved by Muhoozi’s consideration of his views. The CDF welcomed the clarification and said planning for Uganda’s team would resume.

The decision marks a turnaround from last week, when Muhoozi said Uganda would pull out of the event over concerns about how participation might affect relations with the British monarchy. That earlier announcement came after the palace reportedly characterized the Invictus Games as a private charity rather than an official royal initiative. The latest development removes that uncertainty and allows Uganda to continue preparations for the international adaptive sports competition.

The Invictus Games, founded by Prince Harry in 2014, brings together wounded, injured and sick serving military personnel and veterans. Uganda joined the event this year as the first East African country to do so.
