Uganda's Ebola Outbreaks Have Strengthened Disease Response Capacity, Ayume Says

Nile Post reported that Uganda’s State Minister for Primary Health Care, Dr Charles Ayume, says the country has drawn lessons from successive Ebola outbreaks to improve its ability to detect and manage infectious disease threats. Ayume said past emergencies have strengthened surveillance, laboratory services, emergency response systems and research, leaving health workers and communities better prepared for future outbreaks.

According to the report, Ayume linked the gains to increased public awareness, saying communities are now more likely to report suspected cases quickly and share information with health authorities. The remarks followed Uganda’s official declaration on Tuesday that its 2026 Ebola outbreak had ended after the required 42-day monitoring period passed without new infections. Health Minister Dr Chris Baryomunsi said the countdown was tied to the June 16 discharge of the last Ugandan patient; Nile Post also reported that a Congolese national with an imported case was discharged on July 16 and had no known contacts in Uganda.

Ayume said Uganda has expanded testing beyond Kampala, with laboratory capacity now available in border areas such as Arua and Kasese. He said this has reduced delays in diagnosis and allowed faster public health action, especially in regions at higher risk of cross-border disease movement.

The minister also pointed to a more experienced health workforce and disease response protocols that he said are drawing attention from international researchers. Nile Post reported that Ayume cited continuing Ebola vaccine research as part of Uganda’s wider effort to improve prevention and control. The comments underscore how repeated outbreaks have shaped Uganda’s public health preparedness and its role in regional disease response.
