Mityana Residents Seek More Time to Register for Mosquito Nets

What the report says
Residents of Buye Kikumbi Village in Busimbi Division, Mityana Municipality, are asking the government to extend the registration period for a mosquito net distribution programme, saying the current deadline may come before all eligible households are reached. According to Nile Post, community members fear some families could miss out on nets intended to help prevent malaria if the exercise ends too soon.
Local health worker Sarah Ngono said the village’s large population has made it difficult to register everyone within the time provided. She urged authorities to add more days so health workers can reach more residents. Proscovia Nabweteme, who represents the Kabaka in the village, also supported an extension, saying many interested residents had not yet completed registration.
Village chairperson Sunday Ambrose Kafunda Byansi echoed those concerns, saying the deadline is approaching while many people are still waiting to be registered. The residents argued that the exercise should be adjusted to reflect the size of the community and allow more eligible households to participate.
More broadly, insecticide-treated mosquito nets remain a key public health tool in Uganda because they help reduce malaria transmission, especially at night. The residents’ appeal highlights the practical challenge of ensuring broad coverage in densely populated areas during time-limited health campaigns.
