Two Men Get 150-Year Prison Terms for Murder, Robbery of Boda-Boda Rider

What the report says
The High Court in Kampala has handed two men, Aloysius Tamale, also known as Young Mulo, and John Bosco Mugisha, also known as Kayihura, additional prison terms of 80 years each for the murder and robbery of a boda-boda rider in Makindye, Kampala. According to Nile Post, the pair were convicted over an attack on July 19, 2019, in Kanisa Zone, where the rider was killed and his Bajaj Boxer motorcycle stolen.
The court heard that the suspects used part of a concrete block in the attack. Prosecutors, led by Chief State Attorney Happiness Ainebyona, relied on police intelligence and CCTV footage said to have captured the assault and the riders’ killing. The men had already been serving a separate 70-year sentence in another boda-boda robbery case, so the new punishment brings each of their total terms to 150 years unless an appeal changes the outcome.
Justice Alex Ajiji said the long sentence was meant to keep the convicts away from society for an extended period, pointing to public concern over violent crimes targeting boda-boda riders and women in the wider area during 2018 and 2019. The judge gave them 14 days to appeal both the conviction and the sentence. Nile Post also reported that prosecutors had sought the death penalty, but the court imposed prison terms instead.
