Trump says US has ‘understanding’ with Israel on Hamas disarmament deal

What the report says
US President Donald Trump said on Friday that Washington has an “understanding” with Israel over a new arrangement involving Hamas disarmament, even though Israel has not publicly endorsed the plan. Trump made the comments during a cabinet meeting at Camp David in Maryland, saying Israel was “very happy” with the deal and had helped shape it. The remarks came after Hamas said it had accepted the first step in a broader agreement aimed at ending the war in Gaza.
According to Al Jazeera’s report, the proposal would require Hamas to surrender weapons to a Palestinian committee in return for a full Israeli withdrawal from Gaza. The plan was discussed by mediators from Egypt, Qatar, Turkiye and the United States and is part of a wider US-backed framework that also includes a ceasefire, a new governing structure for Gaza and an International Stabilization Force. Trump is chairing a newly announced International Board of Peace that would oversee implementation.
Israeli officials have given mixed signals. Far-right minister Itamar Ben-Gvir rejected the idea as unacceptable, while Israel’s UN ambassador Danny Danon said Israel would support only a deal that prevents Hamas from using weapons again. Al Jazeera also noted that many details remain unresolved, including the timing of weapons transfer, the scope of Israel’s withdrawal and how the security transition would work on the ground.
The report says the arrangement could mark a major shift in Gaza, but it remains fragile and dependent on further Israeli approval and Hamas compliance.
