Al Jazeera reported that US President Donald Trump said his “Board of Peace” has reached an agreement for Hamas and other armed groups in Gaza to disarm. In a Thursday post on Truth Social, Trump described the deal as a step toward placing Gaza under a new Palestinian government that would work with the Board of Peace, while giving Israel security assurances. According to Al Jazeera, Trump said the disarmament would happen in phases and linked it to a ceasefire deal he brokered in October to end Israel’s war in Gaza. He said Israel would withdraw from Gaza once disarmament was completed, with an International Stabilisation Force and a new Palestinian police force taking over security roles. Hamas had not issued an official public response at the time of the report, though Al Jazeera said it had obtained a copy of a document agreed to by Hamas and other Palestinian factions.

The talks were taking place amid mediation efforts in Cairo involving Egypt, Qatar and Turkiye. Al Jazeera reported that Hamas leaders had been in the Egyptian capital since late the previous week, and cited an unnamed Hamas official who described the discussions as positive and progressing. The outlet also noted that Hamas announced on July 6 the dissolution of the body it had led in Gaza for nearly two decades.

The development matters because disarmament, governance and Israeli withdrawal are central unresolved issues in Gaza’s postwar arrangements. Al Jazeera also reported continuing violence and restrictions despite the ceasefire, including Israeli attacks on Thursday that killed six Palestinians, among them two children.
