The Sun reported that Tractor Supply Company plans to close at least 75 Petsense stores in the coming months after a review of the pet-supply chain’s performance. Petsense, which sells pet food and supplies and offers services such as grooming at some locations, was founded in 2005 and acquired by Tractor Supply in 2016 for $145 million. The report said the chain currently has more than 200 stores in 23 states, meaning the closures would leave roughly 125 locations operating.

According to The Sun, Tractor Supply has not identified which Petsense stores will be affected. CEO Hal Lawton told investors the company would shift capital from the underperforming stores into other priorities, including Project Fusion remodels, new store locations and Final Mile delivery, an internal delivery program aimed at larger lifestyle goods. Project Fusion refers to Tractor Supply’s store layout and remodeling effort.

The planned closures come as Tractor Supply continues to expand its namesake chain but faces pressure on results. Citing Chain Store Age, The Sun reported that net income for the second fiscal quarter of 2026 fell 16.1% to $360.7 million from $430 million a year earlier, while net sales rose 2.3% to $4.54 billion, helped by new stores. Lawton also pointed to higher fuel costs and drought in some Southeastern markets as factors that weighed on customer spending and seasonal demand.

The move matters because it shows Tractor Supply narrowing a weaker part of its portfolio while still investing in its core rural lifestyle retail business. The company opened 90 stores last year and plans nearly 100 openings by the end of 2026, though The Sun reported it has reduced its 2027 opening target to 85 to 90 stores.
