Todwong Urges Prison warders to Champion Household incomes

What the report says
National Resistance Movement Secretary General Richard Todwong has urged Uganda Prisons Service officers to use their leadership roles and professional experience to help boost household wealth and community development. According to Watchdog Uganda, he delivered the remarks at the Uganda Prisons Academy and Training School in Luzira during sessions for officers enrolled in command and leadership courses.
The participants included officers from several training programs, among them the Intermediate Command and Staff Course, Junior Command and Staff Course, Senior Non-Commissioned Officers Course and Junior Non-Commissioned Officers Course. Todwong encouraged them to complement their official duties with income-generating work, including commercial agriculture and manufacturing, and to support government programs aimed at improving livelihoods.
He specifically pointed to initiatives such as the Parish Development Model and Emyooga, saying poverty reduction should begin at home and that officers should help model disciplined saving and investment. He also linked peace and security to economic progress, arguing that stability gives people room to work and build businesses. In addition, he called for national unity, rejection of sectarianism and discrimination, and stronger efforts to curb corruption through integrity and accountability.
The remarks reflect a broader government message in Uganda that public servants and security personnel should support economic transformation alongside their core duties. In this case, Todwong framed prison officers as influential community leaders who can encourage social cohesion and practical wealth creation.
