TechCrunch reviewed Autonomous Key, a $9 NFC-based device designed to make access to distracting phone apps more difficult. The product works with a companion app that lets users block selected apps, then requires them to tap the physical key to the phone before those apps can be opened again. TechCrunch said each access period can run for as long as 60 minutes before the apps are locked once more.

The idea is to add friction where conventional screen-time tools often rely on reminders, timers or the user’s self-control. A person could leave the key in another room, at work or at a gym, making an urge to open apps such as Instagram or TikTok require a deliberate physical step. TechCrunch noted that the $9 price is below several competing products, including Blok, Unpluq and Brick, while Brick offers some more advanced controls.

According to the review, Autonomous Key is about 3 inches long and supports Android phones running Android 8.0 or later and iPhones on iOS 15 or later. Its app tracks unlock patterns, including frequency, duration and time of day, and uses AI-generated summaries with a deliberately irreverent tone. The product does not require subscriptions or paid tiers for additional features, and one key can be linked to multiple phones.

TechCrunch also flagged limitations from testing, including occasional trouble getting the NFC scan to register. The reviewer suggested it may not be ideal for apps that must be accessed reliably throughout the day. If the key is lost while apps are locked, the current workaround is reinstalling the app, though the company says a backup unlock option is planned. Autonomous Key is in beta after a Kickstarter campaign and has begun shipping in five colors.
