The Associated Press reported that Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” brought in an estimated $87 million in its second weekend in North American theaters, a 30% decline from its debut. AP said that gives Nolan his strongest second weekend to date, before adjusting for inflation, topping the $75.2 million second-weekend haul of “The Dark Knight” in 2008.

Studio estimates cited by AP put the film’s global total at about $639.6 million, including $128.3 million from international markets over the latest weekend. Premium formats continued to drive demand: IMAX accounted for $48 million worldwide during the weekend, while 70 mm IMAX screenings, available on 41 screens globally, generated $5.2 million. AP reported that many 70 mm IMAX showtimes are sold out through September.

The result came during a period with little major new competition, though AP noted that “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” arrives next weekend and features “The Odyssey” cast members Tom Holland and Zendaya. Box office analyst Paul Dergarabedian told AP that Nolan’s film is showing unusually strong staying power and that theaters have been adding showtimes to meet interest.

Other films in the weekend rankings included Disney’s “Moana” at $10.5 million and “Toy Story 5” at $10 million; AP reported the latter has passed $1 billion worldwide. “Hadestown: The Musical” opened with $9.7 million, while Olivia Wilde’s “The Invite” added $2.6 million. AP said the overall year is tracking about 10% ahead of last year, with the summer box office now above $3 billion.
