What the report says

Eurogamer reports that Santa Monica Studio creative lead Cory Barlog has said the next mainline God of War game featuring Kratos will continue from God of War Laufey. Speaking during a San Diego Comic-Con panel, Barlog indicated that the studio’s work on the Faye-focused title is intended to broaden the series’ world while laying groundwork for the following Kratos-led entry.

According to Eurogamer’s account of the panel, Barlog described Laufey as part of a wider narrative plan for the franchise, rather than a standalone detour. He said the team wants to explore different characters within the series’ mythology, while also making clear that Kratos games remain part of God of War’s long-term future.

God of War Laufey was announced at San Diego Comic-Con and is scheduled for release on 16 February 2027. Eurogamer notes that the reveal followed a State of Play presentation and drew attention in part because Faye, also known as Laufey, is stepping into the protagonist role. The article also says actress Deborah Ann Woll, who plays Faye, has said the concept dates back to the period around the 2018 God of War reboot and that she is unconcerned by negative reaction to the reveal.

The development matters for fans because it positions Laufey as a bridge between the Norse-era story so far and whatever Santa Monica plans next for Kratos. Eurogamer also reports that Laufey is not expected to receive a PC version, citing Sony’s stated direction for non-live-service releases.
