BBC Sport reports that England’s World Cup exit in Atlanta on Wednesday has renewed concern about domestic abuse linked to major football matches. The article cites Lancaster University research finding that domestic abuse rises by 26% when England play and by 38% when the team loses. BBC Sport frames the issue as a serious risk for some women and girls during tournaments, when disappointment, tension and alcohol consumption can coincide with existing abusive behaviour.

Rebecca Goshawk of the domestic abuse charity Solace told BBC Sport that some survivors fear what may happen when partners return home after matches. She said abuse connected to football is rarely an isolated incident and is more often part of an ongoing pattern that can include verbal degradation, coercion or physical violence. She stressed that responsibility lies with perpetrators, not the sport itself, and said men concerned about their own behaviour can seek help.

The report also cites National Police Chiefs’ Council data from Euro 2024, when more than 300 domestic abuse offences were reported in which victims believed the behaviour was football-related. Figures for the 2026 World Cup period are not yet available, but Goshawk expects similar concerns to emerge because broader levels of misogyny and domestic abuse have not significantly shifted.

Olivia Rose, the Crown Prosecution Service’s National Stalking Lead, told BBC Sport that abuse can include controlling behaviour such as monitoring phones and social media, repeated messages and emotional blackmail. The CPS said most police-referred domestic abuse cases result in charges, and urged communities to watch for vulnerable people. BBC Sport listed emergency and confidential support routes, including 999, 101, the National Domestic Abuse Helpline, Live Fear Free in Wales and Solace’s advice line.
