Ten killed in Russia-Ukraine as protests continue over Kyiv defence revamp

Al Jazeera, citing its staff, AFP and Reuters, reported that Russian and Ukrainian strikes killed 10 people across Ukraine, Russian-occupied territory and Russia on Friday, July 17, 2026, while protests continued in Ukraine over a major defence leadership shake-up. The attacks included Russian drone strikes on port infrastructure in Mykolaiv, where local prosecutors said three foreign-registered ships were damaged and two Ukrainians aboard one vessel were killed.

In Odesa, Deputy Mayor Oleksandr Filatov said a Russian missile hit a residential building, killing two people and wounding eight. Ukrainian officials also reported one person killed in a drone strike on a bus in Marhanets and a 70-year-old woman killed in Kherson, with several elderly residents injured. On the other side, Moscow-appointed or regional officials said Ukrainian strikes killed two people in occupied Kherson region, one man in Russia’s Belgorod region, and another person in Russian-controlled Gorlivka.

The violence coincided with a second day of demonstrations after President Volodymyr Zelenskyy removed Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov as part of a cabinet reshuffle. Al Jazeera reported that thousands gathered in Kyiv, including outside Zelenskyy’s office, while pro-Fedorov rallies were also reported in Kharkiv, Ternopil, Mykolaiv, Chernivtsi and Lutsk. Fedorov, 35, had been associated with efforts to modernise Ukraine’s defence ministry and had publicly criticised military chief Oleksandr Syrskyi after being forced out.

Zelenskyy named Yevgeniy Khmara, head of the SBU security service, as acting defence minister and later tapped former Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko to lead Ukraine’s defence and security council. The dispute matters because Ukraine is balancing wartime command decisions, public confidence and continuing Russian attacks on civilian and port infrastructure.
