Tanzanian rangers arrested as police investigate death in national park

Tanzanian police have arrested three park rangers after a man died and two others were injured in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, according to BBC Africa. The incident happened on Wednesday, when the three men were detained after entering the protected area on a motorcycle without following what officials said were the required procedures.

Police said the men were travelling from Arusha to Babati for a funeral when they lost their way and entered the conservation zone by mistake. One of them, Sefu Musa, 25, later died while another, Salimu Haji, was taken to hospital in critical condition. The third man, Abdallah Nuru, returned to Arusha and told local media that the rangers assaulted them, allegations the BBC says police are now investigating.

Nuru claimed the men had already gone through the gate, realized they were on the wrong route and tried to turn back when they were stopped again. He alleged that the rangers accused them of poaching, forced them to strip, made them roll on thorny shrubs and beat them. Those claims have not been independently verified in the report.

The case comes amid longstanding criticism from rights groups and local communities over alleged excessive force, arbitrary arrests and harassment in Ngorongoro. Authorities say their actions are aimed at protecting the conservation area and enforcing regulations.
