Tanzania: Textile Investment Helps Tanzania Close Its Manufacturing Gap

Tanzania’s cotton sector is producing more raw material than its domestic textile industry can handle, according to Bird Story Agency’s report published by AllAfrica on 6 August 2026. The story says the country grows substantial volumes of seed cotton, but limited spinning, weaving, dyeing and garment-making capacity means most lint is exported while local designers and factories often import fabric from abroad.

The report highlights the gap through the experience of fashion designer Fatuma Hamis, who said she frequently relies on imported materials because suitable local fabrics are hard to find. It also notes that garment maker Taven Garments, established in 2022, employs more than 300 workers but still sources some inputs from overseas because domestic supply is inconsistent. Textile expert Elias Ipyana Sollo and economist Aloyce Mchunga said the missing middle of the value chain is limiting jobs, income and competitiveness.

Officials quoted in the article said the government and private sector are trying to attract more investment across the cotton chain, including in spinning and textile production. Renatus Luneja of the Tanzania Cotton Board pointed to the Nyamatara Industrial Zone in Mwanza as one effort to support added-value manufacturing, while Venance Mashiba of the Tanzania Investment and Special Economic Zones Authority said investors can access incentives, though land access and regulation remain challenges.

The report places the issue in a broader industrial context: Tanzania has strong cotton production, but without more processing capacity it continues to lose value by exporting raw lint and importing finished or semi-finished goods. That makes the sector important not only for farmers, but also for jobs, industrial development and the country’s wider manufacturing strategy.
