Tanzania: Mwanza Water Project Hits 70pc

What the report says
Mwanza’s major water infrastructure project has reached 70% completion, according to Tanzania’s Daily News via AllAfrica. The work is taking place in Mwanza City and includes five storage tanks, transmission pipelines and two pumping stations. The project is being overseen by the Mwanza Urban Water Supply and Sanitation Authority (MWAUWASA), whose executive director, Engineer Mashaka Sitta, briefed visitors at the site on the latest progress.
The project is intended to improve clean water supply and sanitation for an estimated 450,000 people in Mwanza and nearby outskirts, including areas such as Nyegezi, Mkolani, Buhongwa, Nyamazobe and others. It is being carried out under the Lake Victoria Water and Sanitation Programme at a reported cost of 46.24 billion Tanzanian shillings, excluding VAT. Construction began on December 24, 2024, and is scheduled for completion on December 24, 2026.
The article says the scheme includes five water tanks with a combined capacity of 31 million litres, 40.5 kilometres of major transmission pipelines, two pump-house buildings and nine water pumps. One tank in Buhongwa was reported at 85% completion. When finished, the project is expected to improve storage and distribution capacity as Mwanza’s population and economic activity grow.
National Uhuru Torch Race Leader Mr Wazo Mwang'onda praised MWAUWASA for supervising the work and urged timely completion. He also called on residents to help protect the infrastructure. In broader context, water-supply projects of this kind are commonly used to expand reliable access in fast-growing urban areas, especially where demand is rising faster than existing systems can handle.
