What the report says

Sydney Marathon organisers are facing scrutiny after unveiling a double-sided finisher medal that online observers say appears to show Munich’s Allianz Arena rather than Sydney’s Allianz Stadium. The BBC reported that the design was shared on the marathon’s official social media accounts, where organisers said the medal was meant to reflect landmarks along the course, including the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Sydney Opera House.

The issue was spotted by social media users and media watchers after the medal reveal. According to the BBC, the stadium image on the medal looks more like the Munich venue, which has a distinctive faceted exterior, than the Sydney stadium near the marathon route. The BBC said it had contacted Sydney Marathon for comment.

The medal’s other side features artwork by First Nations artist Ambrose Killian, who told the BBC he was not responsible for the contested stadium image. Organisers said the circular edge includes 42 markings to represent the course’s kilometres. Around 40,000 runners are expected for the event on 30 August, after more than 120,000 ballot entries.

If confirmed, the mistake would echo a similar medals-related error at last year’s Great North Run in Newcastle. More broadly, it highlights the reputational risks of high-profile event branding, especially as Sydney Marathon now holds a place among the Abbott World Marathon Majors.
