Sudan: ICC Representative - Investigations Into El Fasher Crimes Continue, With Commitment to Holding Perpetrators Accountable and Preventing Impunity

What the report says
Representative of the International Criminal Court’s Office of the Prosecutor, Dahiro Sant Ana, said investigations into alleged crimes in Sudan’s Darfur region are continuing, including reported events in El Fasher. The remarks, carried by the Sudan News Agency through AllAfrica, were made in Khartoum during a legal symposium on preventing impunity for alleged Rapid Support Forces abuses in El Fasher.
Sant Ana said the court’s work in Darfur stems from a UN Security Council referral under Resolution 1593 of 2005 and is limited to crimes in that region. He said the office had already been examining events in West Darfur before shifting some resources to El Fasher, and that investigators had made progress in gathering facts and linking them to evidence that could identify those responsible.
He also described witness testimony, satellite imagery and other evidence as central to the inquiry, while stressing the need to protect sources and preserve confidentiality. According to the report, the ICC office says it seeks both incriminating and exculpatory evidence and works independently and impartially.
The representative said the office relies on cooperation with the Sudanese government, civil society and others, and is willing to help strengthen local documentation capacity through training and technical support. He said accountability is essential to justice and peace in Sudan and urged continued documentation of violations in El Fasher.
