Sudan: Heavy Rains and Floods Worsen Suffering of Displaced Persons in Blue Nile State

AllAfrica, carrying a report by the Darfur Network for Human Rights, said on 30 July 2026 that heavy rains and flooding are worsening conditions for displaced people in Damazin and other parts of Sudan’s Blue Nile State. The report described a deteriorating humanitarian situation in shelters and displacement camps, where thousands of people are already affected by armed conflict and limited aid access.

According to the Darfur Network for Human Rights, flooding has damaged or destroyed temporary shelters in several displacement sites and made movement more difficult for residents. The group said the conditions are also obstructing the delivery of humanitarian assistance to affected areas. Displaced residents reported worsening shortages of food, medicine and shelter materials, while access to healthcare remains limited.

The report warned that stagnant water, poor sanitation and a lack of safe drinking water are increasing the risk of malaria and waterborne disease. DNHR identified children, women, older people and persons with disabilities as among those most exposed to harm as living conditions decline.

Displaced communities appealed to aid agencies, authorities and international actors for emergency shelter, food, medical supplies, clean water, improved sanitation and measures to reduce flood and disease risks. DNHR also called for scaled-up humanitarian assistance, coordinated flood mitigation and unimpeded access to affected communities. The situation matters because seasonal flooding is adding a new layer of risk to populations already displaced by Sudan’s conflict and dependent on fragile relief systems.
