Spiro Uganda to triple mega battery-swapping hubs by December

What the report says
Spiro Uganda says it plans to expand its mega battery-swapping hubs from four to 11 by December 2026, citing growing demand for electric motorcycles in Uganda. The company said the wider rollout will be supported by maintenance services and spare parts, which it described as important for encouraging more riders to adopt electric two-wheelers.
According to The Independent Uganda, the update came from Bruce Mucunguzi, Spiro Uganda’s deputy country director, during the Renewable Energy Conference and Expo 2026 at Kampala Serena Hotel. He said the company is combining solar-powered and grid-powered hubs in its network. Each mega hub can charge at least 200 batteries at the same time, which is intended to improve battery availability and reduce waiting time for riders.
Spiro said its current mega hubs are in Mukono, Soroti, Jinja and Bukoto in Kampala. The planned increase would add to its broader network of more than 360 battery-swapping stations nationwide. The system allows riders to exchange depleted batteries for charged ones, helping keep motorcycles in use.
The report also noted broader policy support for electric mobility from government officials, who said Uganda’s sector needs clearer standards and regulations for charging and swapping infrastructure. Officials highlighted safety, access, metering, tariffs, billing and licensing as areas that will need attention as the market grows.
