Nile Post reported that two children in Adjumani District are said to have died from suspected rabies after dog bites in Itirikwa and Pakele sub-counties, heightening community concern over access to anti-rabies vaccines. Residents and local leaders linked the deaths to a prolonged shortage of vaccines in government health facilities, saying families struggled to obtain treatment from private providers because of cost and limited availability.

The report cited Charles Edema Drabe, the LC I chairperson of Aliwara Village, who said stray dog attacks had become more frequent and described a recent incident in which several people were bitten but recovered after treatment. Caesar Ingavure, a resident who said he lost a son to suspected rabies last year, appealed for more reliable supplies in public facilities. Adjumani Resident District Commissioner Swaib Toko said he had reported community complaints about dog bites and vaccine shortages to relevant authorities.

District health and production officials also acknowledged the problem. The district health officer attributed the shortage to rising demand and inadequate supplies, while District Production Officer Godfrey Mamawi Ambayo said Adjumani had gone nearly two years without government-provided anti-rabies vaccines, disrupting dog vaccination efforts. He said awareness campaigns had been intensified in high-risk areas, about 70 stray dogs had been killed, and the district was considering buying vaccines on the open market.

As general public health context, rabies is usually fatal once symptoms appear but can be prevented if exposed people receive timely post-exposure treatment. Nile Post reported that local leaders, including LC5 Chairperson John Anyanzo Ambayo, are pressing the Ministry of Health and district stakeholders to restore vaccine supplies and strengthen stray dog control.
