Southern Africa: Zimbabwean Arrested in Durban After Posing As Artist to Access SADC Summit

A Zimbabwean man was arrested in Durban, South Africa, after allegedly trying to pose as a performing artist in order to gain accreditation for the 46th Ordinary Southern African Development Community (SADC) Summit, according to New Zimbabwe as distributed by AllAfrica. South Africa’s National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure, or NATJOINTS, said the man claimed his identification and supporting papers had been stolen, but he was detained after he could not produce valid documentation for the high-profile regional meeting.

The report said the incident came as South African authorities intensified security around the summit, which was due to bring 12 heads of state and government to Durban. NATJOINTS chairperson Lieutenant General Tebello Mosikili said security operations had already been under way since 3 August and had covered preparatory meetings and side events without disruption. She said the security cluster was fully deployed and prepared to protect delegates and keep the event running smoothly.

Mosikili also warned that planned protests and marches would be monitored closely. She said peaceful, lawful protest would be allowed, but any criminal activity, intimidation, damage to property or attempts to disrupt the summit would be met with a response within the law. The report noted that road closures were expected around the International Convention Centre and along routes used by visiting leaders.

The case highlights the sensitivity of security planning for large regional gatherings and the effort by host authorities to control access and screen participants carefully.
