South Africa: Team South Africa Advances Energy Investment Agenda in China

South Africa’s Department of Electricity and Energy says a recent Team South Africa mission to China has advanced efforts to attract investment for the country’s energy infrastructure and deepen ties with Chinese industrial companies. The delegation was led by Electricity and Energy Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa and took part in the South Africa-China Electricity and Energy Investment Conference in Beijing this week, according to the material distributed by AllAfrica from SAnews.gov.za.

The department said the visit was aimed at aligning Chinese industrial strengths with South Africa’s priorities, especially those linked to the Integrated Resources Plan 2025 and the government’s industrial-led growth strategy. It said the mission generated a pipeline of investment interest, including preliminary interest from six original equipment manufacturers in the energy sector.

The trip also produced progress on specific projects and partnerships. These included Sasol’s commissioning of Envision to design a green hydrogen system for its Sasolburg operations, which is expected to support possible future production of eMethanol and sustainable aviation fuel. In addition, South Africa’s National Radioactive Waste Disposal Institute signed a memorandum of understanding with China National Nuclear Corporation to cooperate on advanced nuclear waste disposal technologies.

According to the report, the delegation also visited sites and technical facilities related to green hydrogen, green ammonia, data-centre power supply, nuclear waste storage, ultra-high-voltage transmission and special economic zones. The department said the mission helped move discussions from policy toward implementation and could support future energy and infrastructure projects.
