South Africa: SA Secures Usd500 Million to Improve Basic Services in Metros

What the report says
South Africa has signed a USD 500 million sovereign-backed loan with the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank to help upgrade basic municipal services in its eight metropolitan cities, according to SAnews.gov.za as distributed by AllAfrica. The funding is meant to support improvements in water and sanitation, electricity, and solid waste services through the Metro Trading Services Program.
The report said the metros are home to about 22 million people and generate roughly 85% of South Africa’s economic output, but are under pressure from aging infrastructure, rapid urban growth and climate-related risks. The program is intended to reduce non-revenue water and electricity losses, improve waste management, and build stronger institutional capacity for more reliable service delivery.
National Treasury said the financing is part of a broader effort to improve governance, financial management and operations in municipal trading services. The article said the investment is AIIB’s first in South Africa, marking a new partnership focused on sustainable infrastructure.
According to National Treasury’s projections cited in the report, the program could help all eight participating metros meet minimum performance conditions by 2031, while lowering water losses and electricity losses. The initiative matters because it targets essential services in the country’s largest urban economies and is tied to longer-term climate resilience and low-carbon urban development.
