South Africa: Generations Moves Timeslot for the First Time in 32 Years

According to a Scrolla report distributed by AllAfrica, SABC1 is changing its weeknight primetime schedule from Monday, 27 July, moving Generations: The Legacy from 8pm to 8.30pm. The report says this is the first timeslot move for the long-running South African soapie since its origins in the early 1990s.

Under the revised line-up, Skeem Saam will continue airing at 7.30pm, Uzalo will move into the 8pm slot, and Generations: The Legacy will follow at 8.30pm. Scrolla reported that SABC1 channel head Ofentse Thinane described the shift as a trade of positions between Uzalo and Generations, while saying both shows remain central to the channel’s primetime offering.

The scheduling change matters because these programmes are among the broadcaster’s most recognizable weekday dramas and are key parts of South African television viewing habits. Scrolla reported that Uzalo remains South Africa’s most-watched television programme, while Generations: The Legacy is one of SABC1’s longest-running soapies and continues to draw large audiences.

SABC has not provided a detailed reason for the swap beyond presenting it as a refresh of the schedule, according to the report. The broadcaster is also expected to announce further programming changes on 27 July, the same day the new arrangement takes effect.
