The cases include the continued bail fight of Brown Mogotsi in Johannesburg, the ongoing trial-within-a-trial involving alleged underworld figure Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala and co-accused in the Gauteng High Court, and a Pretoria case involving a man accused of deliberately infecting his former girlfriend with HIV.

Mogotsi, described in the report as a self-proclaimed political fixer, returned to court after losing his bid for release. The Gauteng High Court found no new facts to justify bail, leaving him in custody as the case moves toward trial. He faces charges tied to allegations that he staged a fake assassination attempt in Vosloorus in 2025, including perjury, defeating the ends of justice, unlawful firearm possession and firing a gun in public.

In the Matlala matter, the court is still hearing arguments over whether evidence gathered during an arrest was lawfully obtained. The defence wants the material excluded, while the State says the arrest, search and seizure were legal and rejects claims of assault or torture. Separately, the Pretoria accused faces attempted murder charges, with the National Prosecuting Authority alleging the relationship ended after the woman discovered antiretroviral medication and later tested positive for HIV.

Outside the courtroom, the Democratic Alliance renewed its call to abolish the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption, arguing that South Africa needs a fully independent anti-corruption body. The developments underscore how criminal, constitutional and anti-corruption disputes are converging in Gauteng’s courts and political debate.
