Sophie Cunningham’s podcast co-host defends trans athletes - Awful Announcing

What the report says
Awful Announcing reported that West Wilson, Bravo personality and co-host of Sophie Cunningham’s “Show Me Something” podcast, publicly pushed back against the focus on transgender athletes after Cunningham drew criticism for remarks in an ESPN feature. Cunningham, a guard for the Indiana Fever, said she had been accused of hostility toward transgender people but maintained that her position was about “protect[ing] women’s sports” and young female athletes.
According to the outlet, Cunningham also described herself as politically centrist, saying people often assume her views. ESPN commentator Stephen A. Smith then supported her stance, using a hypothetical example involving an NBA player transitioning to the WNBA, which Awful Announcing characterized as unrealistic and not a goal advanced by transgender advocates.
Wilson responded in a TikTok posted over the weekend, arguing that transgender participation in American sports is being portrayed as a much larger threat than it is. He said repeated attention from politicians, athletes, journalists and media outlets further marginalizes transgender people by presenting them as a danger to sports or society. He also said the number of transgender athletes in the NCAA is very small, citing roughly 10, and suggested eligibility questions could be handled case by case.
The exchange matters because it shows disagreement within Cunningham’s own media circle over an issue that has become prominent in sports and politics. Awful Announcing framed Wilson’s response as a more nuanced counterpoint to Cunningham’s comments and to broader commentary that has amplified the debate.
