What the report says

Sheffield Wednesday have dismissed head coach Henrik Pedersen after less than 15 months in charge, the club announced following a run of two defeats in five days. BBC Sport reported that his final game was Saturday’s 2-0 loss at Doncaster Rovers in the South Yorkshire derby, a result that prompted fan frustration and chants calling for him to go. Matt Hamshaw, who joined Wednesday as a coach in August after leaving Rotherham United, has been placed in interim charge.

In its statement, Wednesday said Pedersen had brought stability and leadership during what it called an exceptional period in the club’s history. Sporting director Simon Wilson said the club had anticipated a difficult start to the season, but felt performances had not shown enough progress in style or consistency, even though results had delivered some points. The decision, he added, was intended to give the team the best chance to build stronger foundations for the rest of the campaign.

Pedersen, who had previously been Danny Rohl’s assistant before taking over last summer, leaves after a turbulent spell that included the club’s earliest relegation in EFL history and a difficult Championship season marked by fan protest and an 18-point penalty. This season began more positively, with four wins in five league matches, but form since then has dipped, including a 2-0 defeat at Notts County earlier in the week.

The change comes as Wednesday prepare to continue their League One campaign, with the club eighth before Tuesday’s match against Cambridge United.
