What the report says

Somalia’s government and the Al-Shabaab insurgent group gave sharply different accounts of a deadly clash near Leego in the Lower Shabelle region, with both sides saying they inflicted major losses. According to the report distributed by AllAfrica from Radio France Internationale, the fighting took place on Monday and involved federal forces and militants in an area that has seen repeated violence as the state continues to confront a long-running insurgency.

The Somali defence ministry said on Tuesday that its troops killed 75 militants and wounded 56 others during what it described as an operation against Al-Shabaab positions. The ministry also said militants used vehicle-borne explosives and that some military equipment was damaged. Al-Shabaab, by contrast, said it killed 321 government soldiers in an ambush and claimed to have seized prisoners, weapons and vehicles. Neither version could be independently confirmed from the evidence provided.

The report says the clash underscores the uncertainty and continuing intensity of Somalia’s conflict with Al-Shabaab, which remains active across parts of central and southern Somalia. It also comes at a time when Mogadishu faces pressure over international support for its counter-insurgency campaign. Turkey has become an important partner in training Somali forces, while Washington has ended funding for a UN logistics mission that helps supply combat operations, adding strain to the government’s military effort.
