BBC Sport reports that Chelsea’s goalkeeping prospect Mike Penders is being assessed as a possible long-term challenger for the club’s number one role after completing his move from Genk and spending last season on loan at Strasbourg. Chelsea agreed a £17m deal for Penders in 2024 when he was 19, before he formally joined the following summer. He was part of Chelsea’s Club World Cup-winning squad but did not play in the United States.

The report draws comparisons with Thibaut Courtois, another tall Belgian goalkeeper signed by Chelsea from Genk as a teenager. Former Genk goalkeeper coach Gilbert Roex told BBC Sport that Chelsea’s fee initially seemed surprising because Penders had not yet appeared for Genk’s first team, but said the club had closely tracked his youth and second-tier performances.
