Scotland's Gunn concedes four in San Jose debut defeat

BBC Sport Football reports that Scotland goalkeeper Angus Gunn had a difficult first appearance for San Jose Earthquakes, whose return to Major League Soccer action after the World Cup break ended in a 4-0 home loss to Orlando City. Gunn, 30, joined San Jose after leaving Nottingham Forest and was playing his first club match since a substitute outing in Forest’s 1-1 Premier League draw with Crystal Palace in February.

According to the BBC, the scoreline did not chiefly reflect errors by Gunn, who also made saves that stopped the defeat becoming heavier. Orlando went ahead in the seventh minute when David Brekalo headed in Eduard Atuesta’s free-kick after being left free. Ivan Angulo made it 2-0 in the 29th minute with a low strike from outside the area.

Orlando added two more after halftime. Antoine Griezmann, making his debut after moving from Atletico Madrid, scored from inside the box three minutes after the restart following a San Jose turnover. Braian Ojeda completed the scoring in the 73rd minute, heading in from another Atuesta set piece as the ball went between Gunn and the near post.

The report adds that San Jose also had debut interest at the other end, with Timo Werner denied more than once by Orlando goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau. Despite the loss, San Jose remain level on points at the top of the Western Conference, second to Vancouver Whitecaps on goal difference. They next host LA Galaxy on Sunday.
