Samsung Stock Drops 5.2% as Leveraged AI Trade Unwinds - Yahoo Finance

What the report says
Yahoo Finance, in an article that it said first appeared on GuruFocus, reported that Samsung Electronics shares ended Wednesday trading in Seoul down 5.2%, after earlier sliding as much as 14%. The decline came during a sharp selloff in South Korean equities tied to the unwinding of leveraged bets on artificial intelligence and semiconductor-related stocks.
The report said SK Hynix, another major South Korean memory-chip maker, finished 9.6% lower after record earnings still fell short of market expectations. Samsung and SK Hynix together account for more than half of the KOSPI’s market value, making their moves especially important for the broader index. The KOSPI at one point fell 12.6%, prompting a 20-minute trading halt, and later closed 6% lower.
Citing Reuters, the article said retail investors had increased exposure to the chip rally through borrowed funds and single-stock leveraged exchange-traded funds. As prices dropped, brokers closed some losing positions, which added pressure to the market. South Korea’s finance minister and top financial regulator apologized for allowing the leveraged products without enough prior consideration, according to the report.
The government is planning further limits that could cap an individual investor’s exposure to single-stock leveraged ETFs at 20% of total investment assets. The episode matters because it suggests that market structure and forced selling can amplify concerns about AI-chip demand, memory supply conditions and competition, even when company-specific fundamentals remain under debate.
