Ryan Coogler Met David Jonsson in a Secret Meeting About Black Panther - Variety

Variety reported that Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige said filmmaker Ryan Coogler privately met actor David Jonsson about a role in “Black Panther 3” before Marvel had formally begun its search. Feige, speaking to Empire, said Coogler had been focused on “Sinners,” and Marvel expected to start the casting process with him only after that film’s release and awards-season obligations.

According to Variety’s account of Feige’s remarks, Coogler contacted him roughly a month and a half before that planned process and said he had found the actor he wanted: Jonsson, known for “The Long Walk.” Feige said Coogler then held a discreet hotel meeting with Jonsson and came away convinced he should lead the next chapter. Feige described being moved by Coogler’s certainty and said Marvel had kept the casting quiet for about five or six months.

Variety reported that Jonsson will portray Prince T’Challa II, the son of T’Challa, in “Black Panther 3,” scheduled for theatrical release on Dec. 15, 2028. Marvel announced the news during its Hall H presentation at San Diego Comic-Con. Letitia Wright and Winston Duke are also expected to return, with the story following T’Challa’s son as he grows into the Black Panther role.

The casting carries added significance because the franchise has navigated the loss of Chadwick Boseman, who died of colon cancer in 2020 at age 43. Wright’s character took up the mantle in 2022’s “Wakanda Forever.” The original “Black Panther,” released in 2018, became a major commercial and awards success, including a best picture Oscar nomination.
